Ursula von der Leyen jasno stwierdziła, że w obecnych warunkach europejskie relacje gospodarcze z Chinami są nie do utrzymania. Choć polityczne momentum w Brukseli i wielu europejskich stolicach jest dziś rekordowo wysokie, wciąż nie wiadomo, jak dokładnie Unia zamierza zrównoważyć te relacje.

Współpracowała z wieloma instytucjami, jak np. Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) czy Freedom House. Jest współautorką książki The Idea of China, powstałej na podstawie ponad 100 wywiadów z czołowymi chińskimi badaczami i intelektualistami.
